For Voices/People, Singh called upon L.A./Mumbai vocalist Nikitaa, rapper Illa Straight and flautist Rajeev Prasanna. The collaborations happened after the producer sent out the first draft of the project to the other artists to see how they responded to it. “That’s what I think really brought this song its finesse.” While the song is split into two sides, Singh released the first half, “Voices,” recently and “People” will be coming out in a few weeks.

Mumbai based songwriter and producer, Joshua Singh’s new video, “All I Ever Learnt”, is extraordinary. The song was written during lockdown and was inspired by feelings of isolation and introspectiveness. The song is quite minimal with it’s instrumentation and the video tries to mirror that.

A Humming Heart
Exactly a year ago Mumbai multi-instrumentalist and producer Joshua Singh released his debut five-track solo EP titled Understudy. The musician, who also drums for alt-rockers Spud in the Box, followed that up by collaborating with singer-songwriter k o k u m and rapper Sahir on the R&B offering ‘Breakfast in Bed’ last July. Now, Singh is back with a fresh minimal electronica track called ‘All I Ever Learnt,’ accompanied by a stunning visual.

Concentrating on writing fresh original songs and creating a live show that exhilarates every single person in the audience is the general motto of the band. This has garnered them a large fan base over the last two years in Mumbai, along with many in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, and Pune as well. They have opened for some of the biggest acts in India like Indus Creed, Junkyard Groove and Raghu Dixit and have also opened for international artist, Norah Jones (at A Summer’s Day in Mumbai).

‘Understudy’ is a grower seeped in expression. Making you curious through the atmospheric vocoder acapella of the opening track ‘Few Of Us Around’, the 5-track EP lulls you into the sombreness of its creator’s mind by the time you reach the breathy intimate singing in ‘Normal Is For Fools’.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SPUD IN THE BOX?
The last time Mumbai alt-rockers Spud in the Box announced that they were playing a show was in late 2017 at camping gig series BandCamp on the outskirts of the city. Since then, we’ve not heard much from their own camp and are sort of missing their robust-heavy harmonious sound and decided to track them down to find out what’s going on.

MEET SPUD IN THE BOX’S NEW DRUMMER JOSHUA SINGH
Mumbai six-member band Spud In The Box have been in limbo [read busy with exams] since early May when drummer Vivaan Kapoor announced his departure from the two-year-old band. In the meantime, the members have been playing odd gigs as collaborators with artists such as Siddharth Basrur. Last Sunday, they returned to gigging, playing a set at St Gregorios High School’s festival, Odyssey 2013, with their newest recruit, drummer Joshua Singh. The 18-year-old Singh recently returned from Chennai’s Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music after having completed a guitar course. Says guitarist Siddharth Talwar of Singh, when we meet the band at a jam session at Sion’s That Studio,Â “With the first gig itself [with Singh] we started feeling like a band.”

Spud In The Box have been taking their time to meticulously plan their debut full length album Lead Feet Paper Shoes over the past year, but as it turns out, too much is never enough. When asked if they’ll have a second single out following their new song ‘Manic’ ahead of the album release, guitarist Hartej Sawhney says, “After your suggestion we might need to hold an emergency band meeting after this to determine that.”

All we can see around the place is props ”“ a metal cut-out of the title of their album, a defunct typewriter, some gear and other random interesting-looking stuff. And an inquisiÂtive cat. If the painstaking scribbling on the whiteboard that is kept on the dining table is anything to go by, Spud have their exercise chalked out like a close combat plan.
